Scandinavian apartment
Zwirn, Bratislava, Slovakia
Project description
The two-bedroom Zwirn apartment in Bratislava will serve a young three-member family. We adjusted the layout so the children’s room is not directly accessed from the living room. We enlarged it by reducing the wardrobe and created the main bedroom. The link between living room and bedroom gives the apartment a compact character, while the children’s room, separated by a night corridor, gained privacy.

Kitchen that visually disappears
The kitchen composition in the living zone visually disappears. Tall cabinets define the white cube connected to the corridor. The working area is part of green furniture continuing into the TV wall in the living room.
With RULES, we approached the team with a request to fully furnish our then still unbuilt shell apartment.
We had about a million requirements for what should not be missing in the apartment (or what we definitely did not want there) and almost incompatible ideas about styles, colours and materials that we liked.
After the first meeting, we left with slight concerns about how our visions would be translated into reality and whether, in the end, it would not be “too much”.
However, the very first design proposal for the layout change of the apartment quite literally took our breath away, and the subsequent detailed drawing of the furniture and other furnishings exceeded all our expectations. And I must add that we consider ourselves extremely demanding and annoying clients :)
We will not even comment on the perfect and brutally professional execution of the design. Truly, everything down to the last screw, trim, switch and handle is done in first-class quality, so much so that it is hard to believe it was done by Slovaks.
What we appreciate the most, however, are the crazy practical details of many features we have here, which we only realize once we are actually living in the space.
With this, we would like to thank the whole team of architects (who, due to our constant requests and changes, probably sometimes lost their will to live), and this is definitely not our last collaboration.
We recommend them to anyone who needs their home designed in a high-quality, practical, stylish and modern way, but at the same time not intrusive, overdesigned or overused.
Central dining area
For the centrally placed dining area, we designed a neutrally shaped round table that does not create a barrier and allows the space to flow naturally. Solid wood feels pleasant, and upholstered chairs add comfort.
Entrance area and night corridor
The entrance wardrobe was replaced with built-in storage, enlarging the entrance corridor and the room by the living area. Openness is supported by a full-height mirror. The night corridor serves as an art gallery.
Cozy living room without open shelves
We avoided open display cabinets and designed a space that feels pleasant even without decorations. Smooth green laminate contrasts with rough grey plaster on the TV wall, while the opposite wall is finished with wood.
Loggia in front of the living room and bedroom
The loggia facing the inner courtyard connects the living room and bedroom. Although it could hold more furniture, we kept it open and added only chairs. A carpet softens the contact between bare feet and the cold floor.
Wooden partition between the living room and bedroom
Although the main bedroom is usually placed far from the living area, here it is next to the living room. This creates a special atmosphere, enhanced by replacing a masonry wall with a wooden partition.
Bedroom next to the living room
The close link between the bedroom and living room shortens distances and simplifies everyday life for the parents. We visually connected both spaces and made them more intimate with a soft carpet and textiles.
Neutral children’s room
The children’s room was designed in a playful way, without stereotypical references to gender. The furniture combines standard and custom-made elements. We designed a custom bed, partition and wooden wardrobe.
Bathroom with washing machine
The apartment has one bathroom that must work well and look good. Based on the client’s request, we adjusted the layout to fit a double sink, a bathtub with a screen, and a washing machine hidden in a cabinet.
Toilet
The toilet design follows the rest of the apartment and combines terrazzo tiles, black fittings and storage. To maximise space, the storage was custom-made, like the other cabinets in the apartment.
